has an arrangement that though you will not get it back but one who found or stolen it will not be able to use it. Each mobile has a unique number called the IMEI(International Mobile Station Equipment Identity) number. To check your Mobile phone's IMEI number, key in the following digits on your phone:  *#06#, A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is  your handset's unique IMEI number.Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can call your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM(Subscriber Identity Module) card, your phone will be totally useless.You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can ' t use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no one will think of stealing mobile phones. 

The *#92702689# Command on Mobile Handset

I have tested this command on Nokia hand sets and it works but I do not know on other hand sets it works or not. This command will open a brief history of the hand sets.The simple phones with lesser features will close this command after viewing but phones with advance features will need to be restarted. You can view the following -

  (1) Serial(IMEI) No
  (2) Made-Month of Manufacturing
  (3) Purchasing Date(If fed by the sales person otherwise it will show blank)   
  (4) Repaired - Record of repair)   
  (5) Life Timer - How many hours the set has been in on position so far)
